How you can avoid being part of the 60% of Americans
who wake up with "food hangovers"

A 2021 survey, commissioned by a U.S. food manufacturer, found 60% of Americans regularly wake up with "food hangovers."

A food hangover, as the name implies, is similar to an alcohol hangover, except the pain and discomfort is caused by poor eating choices. The "discomfort" can be digestive tract related, such as bloating or constipation, or it can be widely disparate, such as lethargy, headache or allergic reactions.

"Regularly" for the purpose of the survey meant waking up at least nine days per month with one of more of these food hangover symptoms.

The numbers aren't really surprising considering that most people don't even know what the source of their problem is: Nearly half the people in the survey—49%—didn’t realize how their diet would likely affect their body in the morning until it was already happening.

Scientists list numerous reasons for the food hangover problem, but the highest ranking factors include eating late; consuming too much food; eating highly processed foods that lack fiber; food allergies; and poor gut health to start with.

Exacerbating the problem, it appears most people are apathetic regarding the problem: 40% of respondents said they liked their unhealthy habits too much to make any changes.

A survey that agrees with the science

The survey was conducted by the well-known polling company, OnePoll, and these type of surveys are famously unscientific. However, in this case it turns out that medical and epidemiological research actually agrees with the findings.

The science is quite clear regarding how evening meal choices, eating time and bedtime affect the digestive tract overnight. And "next day issues" related to eating habits is a chronic problem not just in the U.S., but around the world.

A cycle of disruption

Delayed gastric emptying and gravity: When a person eats a heavy meal late, the stomach has to work overtime when laying in a prone position. Clinical data shows that lying down too soon after consuming large or high-fat meals dramatically increases the likelihood of stomach contents and acid pressing back upward. It's a simple matter of gravity: when lying down there isn't any gravity to help the digestive tract move things downward.

The sleep disruption loop: Research published in gastroenterology journals notes a massive overlap between functional dyspepsia (chronic indigestion, bloating, or post-meal discomfort) and poor sleep quality. Studies show over 57% of chronic indigestion sufferers experience regular sleep fragmentation.

The food triggers acid or fullness, which causes "micro-arousals"—waking up without fully realizing it. This leaves a person feeling totally fatigued the next day.

High-fat and spicy foods: Clinical reviews consistently highlight that high-fat foods, heavy proteins, and certain spices relax the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve keeping stomach acid down). When consumed close to bedtime, they essentially keep that valve open longer, setting off a chain reaction of nighttime heartburn and morning discomfort.
