In our youth, we have so much muscle, we only require 30% of it to function well.  As we lose muscle, what used to be easy, now becomes hard to accomplish. Activities we used to take for granted like climbing stairs, exercise, work and just getting out of a car becomes challenging and compromises our balance and agility.  Sarcopenia increases the risk of falling, which can have life threatening consequences. Falls are the most common cause of hip fractures among seniors, which leads to disability and can lead to death.
 
Insulin Resistance Promotes Muscle Wasting
Maintaining healthy insulin sensitivity is extremely important in maintaining healthy muscle and avoids sarcopenia.  When you are young and responsive to insulin, it prevents your muscle from breaking down between meals and overnight. The mechanism responsible for this is called mTOR (Mammalian Target of Rapamycin), which is part of the insulin pathway. Therefore, insulin sensitivity is essential for proper protein building in your muscle. If your insulin receptors become insensitive, muscle wasting becomes inevitable.
